Matthew 14:28-31 –
28 Peter, suddenly bold, said, “Master, if it’s really you, call me to come to you on the water.”
29-30 He said, “Come ahead.” Jumping out of the boat, Peter walked on the water to Jesus. But when he looked down at the waves churning beneath his feet, he lost his nerve and started to sink. He cried, “Master, save me!”
31 Jesus didn’t hesitate. He reached down and grabbed his hand. Then he said, “Faint-heart, what got into you?”
For a little while now I have been intrigued with water metaphors.
How many times have I said, “I’m in over my head!”, “I’m drowning!”, “ When it rains it pours!”, “Waiting on the storm to pass”? The answer is, several.
The other night while reading my devotion I came across this passage and the word SINK caught my attention. Sink -VERB – to become worse or of less value. To go to a lower level especially abruptly.
Peter began to sink when he took his eyes off of Jesus, but more importantly, he began to sink when he looked down at the waves beneath him. The bible tells us that the enemy is our footstool, as in, UNDER OUR FEET! Peter was so bold in the beginning of this passage, he had real water walking faith! One of my favorite songs has a line that says, “If you’re called to walk on water, keep your eyes off the waves, Point your face to the heavens lift your hands and say the name, Jesus, Jesus carry me away, if I’m called to walk on water, give me that water walkingfaith!” He jumped out of the boat, he didn’t tiptoe.
I want you to see the parallel in our lives, we get saved and we have this boldness, God, I’m all in, I’ll go wherever you call me. We jump out of the boat and into the water and before we know it we are neck deep in circumstances, situations and struggles. So often we forget how far we’ve come from our old lives until we get a glimpse of where we used to be. Verse 31 says that
JESUS DIDN’T HESITATE. When Peter said Master save me, Jesus didn’t hesitate. Just like that moment when we cried out at the altar.
And it still rings true today. No matter what you woke up with this morning, no matter what waves are crashing under your feet. Remember that they are UNDER YOUR FEET! Put your hands in the air, point your face to heaven and cry out, praise Him! He doesn’t hesitate. Thank God, He didn’t hesitate then and He doesn’t hesitate now.
I picture Jesus posed like a runner, ready for the signal to start the race. He’s lunging forward just waiting for us to to invite Him in. All we have to do is ask for help. He isn’t going to just jump in uninvited. He waited for Peter to say “Master, save me!”
What is that thing in your life today that you need to say, “Master, save me!”? Is it your finances,a relationship, an addiction, depression, abuse? Only you can answer that question and only He can save you from it. Call out!
